Last Tuesday, May 3rd, a concerned resident of Brooklyn witnessed Con Edison contractors tearing down a mid-sized monk parrot nest built on a pole supporting a power transformer. This action appears to signal the opening salvo in the annual battle between New York City's utility company and the wild parrots of Brooklyn.

Dear fellow wild parrot fans.
I've created a brief photo essay describing the life and times of my favorite bunch of feathered Brooklynites: the wild monk parakeets of Brooklyn College.

Although New York is a city that prides itself as being "in the know", I'm amazed at how many people regard the Brooklyn feral parakeets as "urban legends", at least until they see these birds up-close-and-personal!

While visiting Mannheim, Germany (near Heidelberg) last May (04) we were surprised to find a large flock of feral Alexandrine Ringneck parrots nesting at the Schwetzingen Castle park.
Our friend in Mannheim says they often visit his walnut trees, and chase little birds away from his feeder. He mentions they wake him up rather frequently as well.
Apparently the cold temperatures are not a problem for this hardy species!
If you go, be sure to take your binoculars!

The owners of a free flying parrot considered "part of the family" are hoping to start the new year by being reunited with their pet, which they believe has been stolen.
Edward and Susan Warner, who run The Railway Hotel pub, Station Way, Cheam, had owned the Amazon Orange Wing parrot named Basil for three years before he disappeared.
