Conservation CARIBBEAN NATIONAL FOREST, Puerto Rico -- Raucous squawking erupts from cages filled with dozens of parrots -- a hopeful sound from a species on the brink of extinction. The last chance of survival for the Puerto Rican parrot may lie in forest aviaries where these captive birds began their nesting in January under close observation.

Researchers estimate only 30 to 35 Puerto Rican parrots remain in the wild, making it one of the world's 10 most endangered birds.

SAN DIEGO - They tried to enter the United States in the wee hours of the morning, many of them stuffed in black metal boxes inside a silver Nissan pickup truck.

After being rescued by a border inspector, they spent months in captivity while U.S. and Mexican officials negotiated their repatriation. An official from Mexico City flew to the border city of Tijuana to greet them Monday.

They are not illegal immigrants. They are smuggled parrots - 90 red-headed and lilac-crowned Amazon parrots believed to have been captured in the tropics of southern Mexico. Authorities said they were likely to be sold at flea markets and pet shops, mostly in Southern California, for up to $800 apiece.

Conservation HARLINGEN Joanne Blake didnt know there were wild parrots in the United States.

"I thought you had to go to South America to have parrots," she said.

"Its thrilling," said Blake, a retired substance abuse therapist from Montana. "Its a tourist attraction for the area."

Late Thursday afternoon, about 50 birders attending the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival toured Harlingen and San Benito in search of parrots that make up an expanding population.
