ATHENS - Greek officials began a hunt to track down some 30 parrots imported from Germany which are believed to be carrying a disease that can be passed on to humans, news reports said Tuesday.

Officials in Pireaus, near Athens, said they were starting to track down the birds after they were suspected of having Chlamydia Psittaci, or parrot fever, the Greek daily Kathimerini reported.

The disease can be transmitted to humans, in the form of psittacosis, which causes mild flu-like symptoms.

Authorities were notified by the Greek Embassy in Berlin on December 29 that the disease had been found at the premises of a German bird exporter.

Police located seven birds at the offices of the Greek company that imported the birds but were still tracking down another 23 had been distributed to pet shops around the country.
